08.01.11 - ROB FRASER POSTS FASTEST TIME AT THE CANADA CUP DH RACE

Panorama’s last downhill mountain bike race of 2011 was well attended with nearly 200 riders.

PANORAMA, B.C. – August 1, 2011 – This weekend Panorama Mountain Village hosted the final race of the 2011 Canada Cup downhill series, also a BC Cup mountain bike race, under beautiful blue skies and in front of cheering supporters.

One hundred and ninety two entries ranged from first time “Citizen” category racers to last weekend’s Canadian DH Mountain Bike Champion Andrew Mitchell, who competed in the “Elite” category.

Rob Fraser of Pickering, ON won the Canada Cup Men’s category. Fraser had the fastest time of the day at 03:24.60 on a course he described as rough and physical.

“It was a good length and wicked track,” said Fraser. “I feel like I made it up in the middle rock garden.”

The Canada Cup Women’s category went to Lauren Rosser of Squamish, B.C. with a time of 03:51.67. She also won the Canadian DH Mountain Bike Championship at Panorama last weekend.

“The World Cup will be my last race this season,” she said. “These two wins will give me the points I need to get there and give me the confidence to know I can do really well at Worlds.”

The Canada Cup National Cycling Series represents the highest calibre of coordinated domestic racing in Canada. The series is a stepping stone for any riders with the goals of achieve international success. There are two goals of the series: to provide athletes from across the country with the best possible competitive preparation to aspire to national and international level events, and to develop and promote the sport of cycling in Canada through the encouraged participation of all age and ability categories.

The series is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Since its inception in 1991, the Canada Cup Series produced elite athletes notably Olympians Catharine Pendrel (Luna Pro Team), Marie-Hélène Prémont (Maxxis-Rocky Mountain) and Geoff Kabush (Maxxis-Rocky Mountain), World Championships silver medallist Steve Smith (Devinci Global Racing) as well U23 National Champion Emily Batty (Subaru-Trek) just to name a few.
