07.29.11 - McCORMACK EIGHTH AT BMX WORLDS IN JUNIOR TIME TRIALS
Nyhaug moves on to Supercross finals in men’s Elite

(Copenhaguen, DEN – July 29, 2011) Connor McCormack of Kelowna, BC started the 2011 UCI BMX World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark, on the right note Friday, placing 8th amongst the men’s junior riders in the championship time trials final.

McCormack, the 2010 Canadian Junior Champion, rode the 345-metre course in 35.905.

“I put down two really consistent laps. They weren’t perfect, but they were both pretty good. I am really happy with the performance in the finals,” said McCormack.

It goes without saying that McCormack will race in the junior Supercross rounds, to be held Saturday.

Darryn Goodwin of Australia posted the fastest time of the day and took the World title with a time of 35.237, while Trent Woodcock of New Zealand placed second and Thomas Doucet of France took the third place.

In the men’s elite race, Tory Nyhaug of Coquitlam, BC placed 20th with a time of 34.654 in his first world championships race in the Elite category. Nyhaug did not advance to the medal round as only the Top 16 of the qualification round move forward for a shot at the World title.

Canada’s Jim Brown of Airdrie, AB, placed 88th and will not advance to the Supercross rounds as the Top 64 times of the time trials advance.

Andre Fossa Aguiluz of Norway took the men’s Elite gold medal showing a time of 33.811, followed in second place by Dutch rider Jelle Van Gorkom and Brian Kirkham of Australia in third.

Shanaze Reade of Great Brittain won the women’s Elite title, while Melinda McLeod of Australia won the women’s Junior time trials final.

The main Supercross event will be held Saturday. BMX fans from across the world will be able to watch the Supercross race live at www.freecaster.tv on Saturday, as well as follow the races with Live Timing at http://www.uci.ch/templates/BUILTIN-NOFRAMES/Template1/layout.asp?MenuId=MTYxNzU&LangId=1 and on Twitter at www.twitter.com/bmxcopenhagen
