QUOTE FROM ADAM DUVENDECK, CANADIAN COACH AT
THE PAN-AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
Monique has shown progress all year and I think this
result is a testament to the initiative she has taken
to personally improve her training and racing throughout
this season. While we all aspire to win, I believe that
a track record, and a Pan Am silver medal are two great
results that Monique can now confidently add to her
list of accomplishments going into an Olympic Year.
QUOTE FROM MONIQUE SULLIVAN
“After a long day yesterday with on/off rain
that caused many delays (I was at the track for about
9 hours and rode my track bike for 3min 22secs) I was
happy that I was able to conserve my energy and perform
when I needed to. I was very satisfied to go home with
the track record and top qualifying spot in the 200m
time trial.
Today we were very lucky not to have any rain delays
and it was a positive day for me. I have never been
the top seed at an international race like this and
it was new for me to try to defend it. I raced pretty
well but in the finals Lizandra had the better legs
and took the win. But to go home with silver (and the
Olympic points that accompany it) is a good step forward
for me, and my best performance at Pan-American Championships
in the sprints.”
QUOTE FROM TRAVIS SMITH
I have not had the best prep coming into these Pan
American Championships with some unfortunate family
circumstances. With all that, I was quite happy to have
finished 4th in the team sprint with Joesph and Stephane.
The race that I wanted to do well in was the sprints
as this is the event I won last year and I wanted to
defend my title. It started off well with an ok qualifying
time of 10.34. Once the sprints started it was very
difficult for me and I ended up losing and being knocked
out of the sprint tournament. I was very disappointed
with my performance.
Today was the Keirin and I finally felt like I had
some pretty good legs! In the first heat I won taking
the front with a lap and half to go. In the evening
semi finals, I had a pretty tough heat and I just rode
aggressive and worked my way through the pack to finish
3rd and take the last spot into the final. In the final
I made my move to the front with 2 laps to go, but unfortunately
I just blew up a-little at the end and a few guys came
over top of me knocking me to 4th place. Overall in
the keirin, I’m quite happy I made a lot of moves
and stuck to my plans. I was aggressive and never backed
down in any of the situations!”
QUOTE FROM JOSEPH VELOCE
Leading up to these Pan-American Championships, our
team sprint starter, Stephane, had only been back training
on the bike for a few weeks after recovering from an
injury. With this in mind, we were very happy to finish
third in the qualifying round (out of the gold medal
final by .005seconds!!). This step in the right direction
has given us the confidence we need going forward into
2012.
The following day was the individual sprint. Despite
not having the best technical ride, I qualified 8th
with a time of 10.41. The Pan-Am field is gaining depth
each year, with all of the top 8 riders clocking a time
within 0.15seconds. Going through the sprint rounds
to eventually finish 7th, I learned a lot tactically,
and look forward to using this experience to improve
my performance in future sprint tournaments.
Fortunately, I also had the opportunity to ride the
Keirin the following day. In my first round I was second
behind the bike with some very fast riders. When the
bike pulled off, I found that I had quite a big gap
behind me. I decided to just go for it and attacked,
holding everyone off until the line. The second ride
went really well too, getting on the right move to come
in for a comfortable second place, qualifying me for
the finals. Unfortunately, some bad positioning left
me trying to pass over stacked up riders, with no luck.
I ended up finishing 6th overall, still my best placing
in an international keirin
