Championships Held This Weekend In Airdrie, Alberta
Many of Canada’s top riders expected
at this weekend’s National Championships
(Airdrie, August 26, 2010) – Over 400 of Canada’s
top BMXers are registered for this weekend’s Canadian
National BMX Championships in Airdrie, Alberta. Some
of the best thrill seekers in the country are here to
contest the National titles in two different categories,
the 20 inch category and cruiser category.
Riders from nine years and older will try their luck
on the much appreciated track and home to five time
World Junior Champion, Olympian Sam Cools.
In the senior men’s category, national team member
Jim Brown who is presently ranked 66th in the world
and 10th in North America will be the favorite for the
National Champions title in the Elite 20 inch race.
He will want to make amends for falling short of the
podium in 2009.
The young Jean-Sébastien Houde and Michael Beaudoin
of Quebec have been burning up their provincial series
and taking part in some races south of the border. They
could be contenders at this year’s Nationals.
Houde even won an event on the North American circuit
a few weeks ago.
With Sam cools out with an injury, Danielle Brisson
will be the top competitor in the women’s Elite
20” category. However, she will face a fierce
competitor in Rosemary Adams who is presently the top
ranked Canadian rider in the North American ranking
in this category. The 22 year old is presently sitting
in seventh place.
In the junior men’s category, Steven Creighton,
Nick Benetti and Connor McCormak will try to reap the
rewards of having competed against the best in the world,
as they are fresh off a trip to the UCI BMX World Championships
in Pietermaritzburg in the Republic of South Africa.
Sabrina Millman will equally want to profit from her
learning in South Africa as she goes for Gold in the
Junior Women’s category.
Racing gets underway Friday with qualifying rounds in
the 20 inch category with an individual time trial to
seed riders for the final rounds. Saturday will be the
Championship day for the Cruiser category and Sunday
the 20inch category own the course for their day of
Championship racing.
