Canadian Record At Track World Jr Championships
Alison Beveridge places 6th in Points race,
sustaining two crashes in the 20km race
(Montichiari, Italy – August 12, 2010) Canadian
cyclists hit the track for the second day of the 2010
UCI Track World Junior Championships in the recently
built velodrome in Montichiari, Italie.
In the 200m Time Trial race, Scott Mulder (Vancouver,
BC) posted the 17th fastest qualifying time of 10.76
seconds. A total of 55 cyclists took the start, and
the Top 24 moved on to the first sprint round. Mulder
won his first sprint match up, and then conceded defeat
in the second round against a speedy German cyclist.
In the Women’s individual pursuit, Allison posted
a time of 2:33.89, finishing in 15th position of the
qualifying round. The Top 4 fastest cyclists advanced
to the Final round.
In the Women’s Team Sprint, the duo of Florence
Laplante-Lamarche (Ottawa, ON) and Allison Beveridge
finished 7th with a qualifying time of 37.551 seconds
in the three laps race.
DAY 1
In the first day of competition, wwo Canadians, Alex
Cataford (Ottawa, ON) and Florence Laplante-Lamarche,
competed as the World Junior Championships opened.
Cataford placed 14th of the Men’s Individual pursuit
event with a time of 3:26.240 in the qualifying heat,
breaking the Canadian record of the discipline. Cataford
defeated his own record of 3.26.940, set in the spring
at the Pan-American Junior championships.
In the Men’s 10 kilometre Scratch race, Cataford
placed 20th.
In women’s racing, Florence Laplante-Lamarche
finished 22nd with a time of 38.208 seconds in the 500m
Time Trial.
In the Points race, Allison Beveridge (Calgary, AB)
displayed sheer grit and determination as she came back
from two crashes, with the first happening just 10 laps
into the 80 lap (20km) race.
“It was tough to come back from the first crash,”
said Beveridge. “It took me a few laps to refocus,
but after that I felt the adrenaline! I’m content
with my race, and definitely happy to be injury-free,”
said Beveridge.
She would not only return but also make an impact on
the race as she went on to take a lap with four other
riders and take home a well-deserved 6th place. Beveridge
finished with 23 points, just 4 points outside of the
bronze medal.
